Trust in Milei falls to lowest level since taking office, report finds

Confidence in the government of Javier Milei has reached its lowest level since the libertarian took office in December 2023, according to the latest Government Confidence Index (ICG, by its Spanish acronym) produced by Torcuato Di Tella Universitys School of Government.

Trust in the Milei government stood at 1.94 points over a total of 5 in September, a 5.9% drop from August. 

The score matches the figures recorded by the administration last July and in September 2025.

The ICG is a monthly study that has been conducted since 2001. Based on public opinion surveys, it measures trust in the government on a scale of 1 to 5 across five categories: general interest, overall government assessment, honesty, problem-solving ability, and efficiency.

The ICG for the Milei government has declined 21.4% since the end of 2025. The bulk of the decline, however, took place during the first five months of 2026. Since then, the index has remained around 2 points, with moderate monthly variations.

The biggest news is that government trust in September fell across all five categories compared to the previous month.

A drop across the entire spectrum The biggest drop came in the general interest indicator, which stood at 1.50 points, a 12.3% decline from August. It was followed by the overall government assessment indicator, at 1.60 points, a 9.3% drop.

Honesty, meanwhile, stood at 2.45 points, a 2.9% decline, while problem-solving ability stood at 2.20 points, a 4% drop. Efficiency came in at 1.94 points, a 3.5% decline.

The report also compares the Milei administration with previous governments.

Thirty-three months into his term, President Javier Mileis ICG score of 1.94 is lower than the 2.62 points recorded by former President Nstor Kirchner at the same point in his administration. 

In contrast, the current figure is above the levels recorded by Cristina Kirchner during both of her terms, Mauricio Macri, and Alberto Fernndez at the same stage of their respective administrations.

In terms of the average for his entire time in office, the Milei administrations ICG fell to 2.34 points, its lowest level to date. 

By way of comparison, the report notes that the average ICG for former presidents Mauricio Macri and Alberto Fernndez at the same point in their presidencies was 2.47 and 1.86, respectively.
