Netflix announced a new documentary project on Argentina’s rock icon Charly García, who turns 75 on Friday.

An undisputed figure in Argentine culture, García transformed the country’s music scene with a career spanning generations and a body of work that has reached far beyond the stage to become part of Argentina’s national identity.

Produced by Argentina’s Haddock Films, the project will reportedly depict the musician’s history and impact in his own words.

“Charly, by Charly,” the rockstar said in an Instagram reel announcing the project.

“This documentary is a source of pride, an immense responsibility and, above all, a great joy,” said Haddock’s Vanessa Ragone, an Oscar-winning producer of “The Secret in Their Eyes” who also helmed high-profile Netflix documentary projects like true crime miniseries “Carmel: Who Killed María Marta?” and the film “The Photographer and the Postman: The Crime of Cabezas.”

“Producing a documentary about the figure I consider the most iconic in Argentine music, whose work has been and continues to be the soundtrack of my life, is an extraordinary opportunity made possible by the trust Charly and Netflix have placed in us,” she added.

“Charly’s music is something you can hear over and over — you don’t need to listen to it to hear it in your head. Only true classics can achieve that,” he said.

A nation-wide birthday celebration A defining voice in the country’s modern cultural identity, García’s body of work goes far beyond a vast catalog of classic songs embraced by generations of fans.

His work provided a soundtrack to some of the country’s most significant historical eras, from the brutal repression of the 1970s military dictatorship to the optimism surrounding the return of democracy in 1983.

His immortal melodies and poignant lyrics have tapped into the collective unconsciousness, capturing the anxieties, fears, joys, contradictions and aspirations of a society throughout the years.

In honor of his 75th birthday, celebrations and tributes are planned across Argentina, particularly in Buenos Aires, his hometown.

Plans include concerts at various cultural venues and the release of a new edition of his 2011 album “60×60”, which featured three live setlists recorded with his band The Prostitution.
