Milei calls UN ‘useless’ as he presses Argentina’s Malvinas claim

President Javier Milei used his third address to the United Nations General Assembly to criticize that body, calling it a “useless organization” as he pointed to its lack of results in resolving the Malvinas Islands sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom. 

“Faced with the UN’s impotence, we made a decision,” he said, pointing to the battery of measures the government has taken against companies and individuals linked to an offshore drilling project around the islands.

“Malvinas is a national cause,” Milei reiterated, while calling on the UN to reopen sovereignty negotiations. The president also addressed global energy companies, telling them to invest in the Vaca Muerta oil field, which he described as a “historic opportunity.”

The libertarian leader also accused the UN of contributing to a “genocide” by advising governments to impose lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic.
