Human rights and left-wing activist Patricia Walsh died at 74 on Thursday. She was the daughter of famed writer, journalist and militant Rodolfo Walsh, and as a lawmaker fought to overturn pardon laws that benefitted military dictatorship perpetrators.

Like her father, she worked as a journalist in her youth, and was a social psychologist. She was also part of H.I.J.O.S., a human rights organization grouping the children of dictatorship victims. As a left-wing leader, she was national deputy (2001-2005), Buenos Aires City lawmaker (2007-2009) and two times candidate for president.

Her political career continued alongside her activism for the following two decades, during which she testified and was part of the plaintiffs in the trials against dictatorship perpetrators.

During her time as national deputy, she advocated for and wrote the draft for a bill approved in 2003 that annulled the “Full Stop” and “Duty to Obey” laws issued during the 1980s.

Those two laws had halted for 20 years the possibility of trying military and police officers who kidnapped, tortured and murdered thousands of people between 1976 and 1983, following the 1985 trial against the military junta.

The bill proposed by Patricia Walsh allowed to fully overturn those norms and to restart the crimes against humanity trials in the following years. Over 1,200 perpetrators have been committed for human rights violations since 2006.

A family crossed by the dictatorship Patricia Walsh suffered the consequences of the dictatorship first-hand. Her father, Rodolfo, was a member of armed organization Montoneros and a fierce opponent of the regime. He was murdered by the military on March 25, 1977, a day after the first anniversary of the coup. He was shot on the street in Buenos Aires City while distributing copies of his “Open Letter From a Writer to the Military Junta,” in which he denounced their heinous crimes.

Patricia was 25 at the time.

Six months before that, Rodolfo’s eldest daughter and Patricia’s sister María Victoria — better known as Vicki — died during a massive military operation known as the “Corro Street Massacre,” in which around 200 officers used machine guns to attack a house where five Montoneros leaders were hiding.

The five repelled the attack, but Vicki is believed to have committed suicide after finding herself completely surrounded. Her baby daughter Victoria María, who was in the house, survived.

In May, Patricia testified in a trial on the ongoing Corro Street Massacre trial. “We are sure that this was a massacre because it was 205 [officers] against five. She did not lose her life on her own will, she was murdered,” Patricia said at the time.

Patricia was part of the plaintiff in the trial and was also demanding the last house where her father lived in San Vicente, Buenos Aires province, be expropriated by the state.

A last goodbye “How wonderful it was to have met you, how wonderful it was to have had you in my life — I’m going to miss you so much, my friend,” wrote her friend and left-wing leader Myriam Bregman in an X post.

Bregman recalled how, together with Walsh, they “came up with so many ideas to put the perpetrators of genocide behind bars, to prevent them from being released” and that their fight “was worth it” if they “wanted to build a different future, free from oppression and exploitation.”

No sé por dónde empezar. Son tantas cosas en tan pocos días, con tantas pérdidas.
Como escribió tu querida hija: “Qué vida tuviste… Te pasaron todas”, Patricia.
